Rescue Success Stories
These are just a few of the many success stories we have to share. In over 4 years, COGSR has placed more than 350 GSDs and not a single one has ever come back. Thanks to all the families who have adopted these good dogs and given them a second chance at life. Sadly, for every dog COGSR takes in, another 8-10 do not get help and most of those get put to sleep because humans have failed them. COGSR can only take in so many rescues. Each week I receive between 10-15 emails and phone calls about dogs people want to dump. Most of the dogs are good dogs without major behavior problems and a few simply need some consistent training.
COGSR is funded out of my own pocket with limited donations from families like these. Donations are always welcome. I am building a kennel on 40 acres and hope that I can continue to assist well temperamented GSDs for a long time to come.

Buddy - Turned over to COGSR weighing 45 lbs. Buddy was adopted by Piff and Louise of Genesse and now weighs almost 90 lbs. They love Buddy and Buddy lives a wonderful life now. He is a gentle giant whose main passion in life is playing ball.

Zack - was turned into a local Humane Society. An evaluator improperly labeled him other dog aggressive and he was going to be put down. COGSR picked him up and found he was afraid of thunder and lightning, but his other dog aggressiveness was really only that he was rambunctious and excitable. He also had a bullet in his leg which was removed. He was adopted by Azra and Hladuk and now goes everywhere with them. As you can see, Zack is out snowshoeing with his family and will live a long and happy life.

Bailey
- Bailey was one of four pups and a mother GSD removed by request from
a local shelter. All pups and the mom were adopted out to wonderful homes.
Bailey lives with a family in Denver.![]() |
Heidi
- Heidi was relinquished after a roomates dog attacked and almost killed
her. The attack left her nose disfigured. Heidi lived with COGSR for more
than a year until Eric adopted her as his best friend. Eric and Heidi
have now moved back to New Hampshire and Eric and Heidi are happy as ever
romping in the beautiful woods.![]() |

Colorado German Shepherd Rescue Placed Lucky!
This is just one of our success stories. On the morning of May 24th, 2001, I received a phone call that a young female GSD had been hit by a car the night before in Denver. The woman who hit her put her in her car and drove to her house in the foothills (approximately 40 miles) and when she got home, proceded to get drunk and left the injured dog in the closed up car. On the morning of the 24th a neighbor noticed a dog in a closed car in the sun and went to investigate and, upon finding the injured dog, called for help.

Lucky at approximately 10 months old was running on the freeway and was hit by a car. She had a compound fracture of both bones in her left front leg. We took her to a specialist after x-rays revealed simple casting would not likely be enough to heal the leg. This surgery cost more than $1,000, including a kind discount by the specialist treating the dog.
UPDATE
Lucky's leg healed nicely, and she had surgery to remove the external fixator holding her leg together and was spayed. She was adopted by Jeff, Libby and Adam and is in an important part of the family. She truly is a "lucky" dog and we thank all who helped us with her considerable vet bill. Lucky's story was featured in an issue of Popular Dog Magazine devoted to German Shepherds in 2002.
